There are different walks nearby, where the beauty of the landscape will make you feel like running away to discover streams, pools, fountains, little frogs, grasshoppers and all the secrets that the forest conceals. Besides, you can walk a pair of nice hiking trails not very far from our inn—not difficult at all and with amazing landscape and views — known as Os Petroglifos and Sendeiro das Greas. Casa San Lourenzo can also help you to book outdoor sports such as horse riding, rafting, quad riding… Do not hesitate to ask us for information. To enjoy the sun, the beach, the sea… Baiona offers six sandy areas. Our beaches are A Barbeira, A Cuncheira —with very healthy waters— Os Frades and A Ribeira, all in the Monte Boi peninsula; Santa Marta, named after the peninsula where it stands, and A Ladeira, three thousand metres long, where you can visit a Natura 2000 Protected Area, with sandy dunes and a marshy birdwatching area. Apart from all the above mentioned, from Baiona you can sail to the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. Buy your tickets in advance at Naviera Mar de Ons. Tourism Once in Baiona one can go sightseeing, wandering around the different monuments that honour the royal privileges awarded to the town during the Middle Ages, and the fact of being the very first spot in Europe to find out about the discovery of America. Among these monuments you can visit the mediaeval walls of the Parador Conde de Gondomar, in mint condition, running parallel to the outstanding seafront that stretches from Baredo to Panxón; the most peculiar Floating Maritime Museum, on board of a replica of the Caravel La Pinta anchored on the bay, with secrets hidden everywhere; Our Lady on the Rock, work of the architect Antonio Palacios, with wonderful views over the ria… The old quarter, full of manors and humble fisherman houses, should not be missed. Each parish has its own treasures and appeals, too: paths and natural areas, churches and hermitages, amazing views, petroglyphs, mediaeval ruins… When it comes to mayor events taking place in Baiona, a street market is held every Monday at Sabarís. There you can find good value for money fashion, crafts, household items, fruits and vegetables, flowers, and a wide variety of high-quality typical Galician products. The Arrival Commemoration is a weekend-long mediaeval street market held every year. Streets are decorated and people dress up to relive the days when La Pinta arrived in Baiona in 1493. Religious festivities worth a mention include: Easter; the Corpus Christi, honoured by means of flower carpets; St. John's Eve, that opens the summer season with bonfires and grilled sardines; Our Ladies of Mount Carmel and of Annunciation, holidays devoted to these patron saints of sailors and of Baiona, too; and Saints Cosmas and Damian holiday, which marks the beginning of Autumn with a walnuts and honey market. Just a short ride away from Casa San Lourenzo we find Tui, a monumental town included in the Portuguese Way of St. James, A Guarda, where the most emblematic and visited castro (hill fort) of Galicia can be visited, or Vigo, a big city with a wide shopping and cultural offer. At a longer distance, visits you should not miss are Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela, Porto and the Northern region of Portugal. All along the year, gastronomic, cultural and sport events take place in Baiona. Follow us on Facebook for the latest updates. Baiona and the Portuguese Way along the Galician Coast From 2010 the Way of St. James that comes from Portugal and arrives in Santiago walking along the coast is officially recognised. It runs along the Rias Baixas coastline and Baiona is one of the spots where pilgrims can get their passports stamped. |
